Are You A Manager?

Today’s managers think that, a deep knowledge in their field alone would lead to good results. In particular, those who aspire to become managers of tomorrow, have some of the most unfortunate prejudices. They presume that a vertical knowledge in their own field, say for example, IT is enough for leading a very big organization thereby producing satisfying results. But, this is not true. Many philosophers speak about intellectuality. Having a vertical knowledge in a single domain does not reflect intellectuality. One must acquire as much knowledge as possible during his long walk throughout his career. A manager must be eclectic in his observation, which means, as said by Aristotle, obtaining knowledge from various sources. He must always tend to be a connoisseur of all fields. His arguments must be impeccable. For that, he needs to master everything he could.

If you are a manager from IT field, there is nothing wrong if you understand the development and operations of agriculture based industries. In fact, you must be aware of this too. That is what I am emphasizing. If you think both these systems are independent of each other, I am sorry, something went wrong in you! Dude! Each and every system we have now depends on each other system. This is the reason why the world exists. If one of the systems collapses, then the entire Eco-system would collapse. A best example is the recent economic downturn which came as a result of letting Lehman Bros to collapse. Had the economists predicted the consequences of collapse, either they would have mitigated the effects of the impact or they would’ve struggled a lot not to let Lehman Bros to collapse. Banks like Goldman Sachs played a trump card of tax-payers’ money not only to insulate itself from the impact but also to enjoy lavishly in the form of bonus. What is the moral? If you push anyone down in a queue, you will see everybody in the queue starts to toddle. Our world is similar to that. So, if a manager needs to save his organization from any disaster, he must knew about each and every other system that if collapses, let his organization to toddle. Only then, he and his organization can survive. Hello manager! Start to walk horizontally too!

What If Everything Becomes Green?

The world is been trapped between various issues nowadays. Some talk about climatic change, some about the economic downturn and so on. When you narrow down the issues for the most critical crisis that the earth faces, you would be forced to choose “global warming”. Yes, the most important problem we confront is the drastic climatic change. I am not going to handle a statistics class now rather I would like to remedy the situation. Not only myself, but all of us who have hired this earth for living need to think of a remedy. Probably you might be switching on your brain machine to get some intellectual questions like, “Being a powerless layman, what can I do to stop this damn global warming?” but, dude! There is no room for such philosophy! We need to react soon. Surprisingly, philosophy, as usual, is going to bring in the change in you now. Perplexed? Go ahead reading!

Think Why You Need To Think 'Why'?

You might have heard of facts saying that we use only about 2 to 3 per cent of our brain whereas scientists use a little bit more. What does the phrase, ‘using our brain’ mean? When can one be said that he uses his brain? Simple! ‘Using’ is nothing but ‘thinking’ by using your brain. Consider brain as a resource of ideas, and you always need to utilize your brain to obtain useful ideas and decisions. How can you make your brain work better? Some of you might have tried memory pills or some other tablets believing that it would induce your brain to think. But, many of us are unaware that, we do not need such stimuli and it is quite easy to make our brain think well than others’ do. It is also easy to percolate ideas from your brain through
a very simple practice. (Oh you are eager to know! Huh!)

Facts Inside Leadership Envelop

You might have heard of statements like, “Leadership skills are necessary to be employable.” Or “Leadership is very very essential!” Sometimes the statements are scarier, like, “You can survive this competitive environment if and only if you are a leader!” (Did it pump your adrenalin? Cool down!!). You would start to sweat thinking it as a difficult entity to learn. You would have tried finding the real importance of the word, “Leader” or might have asked yourself who a leader was. At least you would have searched the word to be aware of, before your friends do. OK. As these statements say, Of course, Leadership is essential. But, one must understand that it is neither an abstruse subject nor a complex skill that is very difficult to acquire. Putting it clearly, leadership is not an innate quality. It can be acquired by understanding what it is and by adopting a few principles for practice. Consider a team in a corporate. A manager has to motivate his team and get the work done in time. This definition sounds logical. Okay. Now, a million dollar question for you. Is every manager a good leader? Absolutely No! All managers are not good leaders. Why so? Go ahead reading, to know the reason. Taking a team as an illustration, a leader is not someone who makes himself stand out of a team and get the work done but one who is working with the team, within the team. There is no sign of isolation between a leader and his team.

A leader should always be cool and should attract everyone with a smile. He should communicate well with the team and should be a lovable guy. He must not attract the wrath of his men at any instant. Even if he confronts such a situation, he must be talented to set the affection back to position. He must tend to erase the clear line drawn between personal and professional lives. Don’t be too formal. Next, say if you head a team, you need to accept and value each and everyone’s opinions. Your responsiveness will reward their honesty and commitment in the works you allot to them. Discuss everything with your team members. Let your decisions be democratic rather than authoritative. Understand their personal pain. Encourage them with your words. Words have the power to shape a mind accordingly to your wish. If one of your employees commits a mistake, try not to express your anger through words. Doing so would make him to be less communicative with you, since your action would create a fear in his mind. Encouraging and consoling words are more than any other tangible incentive to an employee. If your team feels your sweetness, I can say, you have started to win their hearts. Come down to their level, unwrap your management coat, and mingle equally with them. If you condescend, you will be the king of hearts!!!

For an organization, a leader should be smart enough to make the smartest decisions. He has to be a creative thinker and produce brand new ideas for his enterprise. He must take considerable risks and must have the analyzing ability to forecast the consequences of the risks. Even if the consequences are negative, he is accountable, and the impact should never depress him. His confidence and self motivation should make him come back to fight and win the battle. He, who does not take risks, will not be a good leader. Risks are necessary to pull the organization forward. He must always have the thought of bringing about a change in his organization. A leader should be an honest, loyal, role model. Is there anyone in this earth, who is not attracted by encouraging and lovable words? This is the key to make your men work for you. They, then, would start to work for your words even ignoring their personal conveniences. After all! People love leaders rather than managers!!!

Learn The Art Of Decision Making

When people get caught between problems, they begin modifying their behaviors, which are usually unusual compared to their common behaviors. These behaviors, instead of pacifying the bad impact of the problems, add oil to fire. As a consequence, even jovial people might turn to mute audiences and seem to be taciturn. A radical change in their way would definitely surprise you. This is natural for any human being, who tries to escape from the humiliation he needs to confront as a result of failure in facing the problems. The people shouldered by him run through his mind, the moment he thinks of the negative consequences in facing the problems. He thinks of his loved ones, his own reputation, and his career, which are all affected by his decisions. These factors make him to be surrounded with worries, hard feelings, anger, and make him lesser than a normal human being.

He searches for a standard solution to resolve these problems. He searches continuously and ends up finding nothing satisfactory. But, he would not know that the key to success is within him. Nature had bestowed an excellent ability to him. That is none but his immature decision making ability. He just needs to nourish it to make it a matured one, thereby elevating him to a perfect leader.

First, the complicated part of decision making is to derive a clear problem statement from the problem-case you confront. It is impractical to get a well defined problem statement and you should not expect that. The case may be your own problem or a problem between two external entities and you being neutral. Cases like, problems between you and any other entity like, your family member, friend, colleague, management of your workplace or even your future life, fall under the former category. In the latter case, you would be neutral and you are forced to take a decision. This category includes problems between your family members, your friends or any other problems took over by you in an advisory counsel and so on. In any case, the derivation of the problem statement from the real case is difficult.

Supposing, you are an employer of an enterprise and you need to resolve a conflict between two of your employees (Or as a family man, between two of your family members, say, your mother and your wife. Frequent huh??!!!!). One would blame the other and justify his or her thoughts and actions. The truth will be invisible as it would be behind the mist of justifications and hard feelings between the two. A good decision maker should be capable of extracting the truth from beliefs and justifications to pull out the root cause of the problem.

Secondly, after deriving the problem statement and root cause of the problem, you always arrive at many decisions which are quite ambiguous. You need to narrow down the number of decisions to one. This is done by listing out the pros and cons of each decision and choosing the one which benefits you more. Your selection of decision should be influenced by your ability to forecast things. You must be capable of working out the consequences of your decisions and choose the best one among them, which leads to lesser bad impacts. You need to maintain a balance between the two employees. You should not let your decision resemble favoritism to one. Your decision should be unbiased. It should be satisfactory to both the parties. Winning one of the hearts and losing the other is a poor leadership strategy. None should have a feel of injustice. The balance will make you keep going (As I said in the ‘crucial ‘balance’ factor’ article). A good leader is the one who always tries to minimize the number of people hating him, to zero. Love has no substitute, indeed!

Next most essential constraint in decision making is the time constraint. Your decisions should be quick according to the problem size. Late decisions do not help. What are all I told you till now must be worked out in seconds and not even minutes!!! If the problem is quite bigger, then reasonable time consumption is intellectual. Efficiency of your decision is inversely proportional to time. I will make the idea clear through my formula, which states as follows,

Efficiency of a decision is defined as the ratio of Resulting Happiness or Satisfaction from the decision (depending on the problem size) to time taken for the decision (depending on the problem size)

Efficiency of a decision = Satisfaction / time;

Further, you must have enough confidence to face the consequences of your decision if bad, and to fine-tune your decision to obtain success. Your decisions must not fluctuate. They must be discrete. If your confidence level doesn’t soar, you may seek some advice from the experienced and experts. Remember, your decisions not only influence your own future but also people behind you, your loved ones and people who have immense faith in you!!!

Why I Always Ask You To Write Down

Humans are the only species, who can express what they want to, clearly through words. They have the ability to use a standard language for communication among them. These are well-known facts. Further, the communication could be in oral or written forms (Written form only for literate!). Obviously, we efficiently harness one of our abilities, the oral communication. What about the second one? Do you think you habitually write? If your response is positive, then applause! Else, I say, you have kept your precious ability trashed with no use for anyone, these days. Am I sounding ludicrous? Absolutely not! A series of questions might surround you now. Why should I write? What should I write? What I get from writing? Go ahead reading!!!

Supposing, you are visiting a scholar’s house and, you happen to be lured by a beautiful quote written on the wall. You would try to memorize that and would succeed in third or fourth attempt. After a week, suppose, you are asked to write an essay by your class teacher, say, you are a student, and fortunately, if it seems that the quote which you saw in the scholar’s house would best decorate the essay, I am sure, you would hit your head several times to retrieve the quote from your mind’s database, but it might result in vain. This happens since humans are liable to forgetfulness. What If you had written it in a notebook for your reference? You would not have struggled. It is really a good habit to write down what you know, what you see, what you learn, so that it will buttress your future activities.

Let’s elevate our example to an enterprise level. In an enterprise, you will be able to learn a lot practically from old documents of the enterprise, your colleagues and from your own curiosity of analyzing things deeper. In addition to this, you might have some unique talents in yourself that the rest may not possess. Every successful product of the enterprise, in which your contribution contributes the major part of the product, will reflect your interest and attitude towards your work and your unique way of handling things. Supposing, one day, you confront a problem, whose consequences are severe to an extent that you need to quit the company. Its impact would definitely shake an area of reasonable size in your company. Think of the loss in knowledge pool of the company. Your gigantic knowledge bids adieu to the company. Isn’t this a sign of ingratitude? You could have overcome this, if you had documented everything. I do not insist you to document by scheduling time for that. Just a few lines about what you had learnt periodically in leisure hours would add up to a big document, no matter even if it is informal. Expressing your ideas in black and white will also keep your reputation alive even after you depart the company.

If you are a student, documenting would drag you to a situation in which you need to search for appropriate words that suits the purpose of your document, which would result in widening your vocabulary. Writing down your ideas has innumerable number of merits than you actually are aware of. Hello! Get up! Search for a notebook and a pen!

I Blink When I Sit In An English Presentation

There would be times when you might have wondered why connoisseurs of English language and philosophers use unfamiliar and esoteric vocabulary mostly in writing. Adding to this, you might have criticized your friends for doing so if they had used such vocabulary for writing. One must understand that, they do so not as an endeavor to create an air of pride around them, but they are more specific in using the language in a particular situation than others do. They deserve appreciation. Now think why an expert or a master of English uses such vocabulary? Why did I say they are more specific in expressing their ideas according to a particular situation? Now let me say you something useful. Vocabulary is inevitable in any profession. One of the most essential points to be kept in mind is, the more words you learn, the more you can be accurate in expressing your ideas. More words will give you confidence to face a large number of gatherings and creates a good image of yours among your audience.

Everything okay, dude! ‘Why such unfamiliar words, provided you have thousands of commonly used words?’ would be your question. While using words, you should remember some constraints and if you do not abide by such constraints then you may sound odd spoiling your reputation. A simple illustration will make the idea clear. Let us say, you are talking about, “following rules” in a meeting. If the meeting is in a school, you may use the words, “indiscipline”, “obey”. If the meeting is between judges, you should use, “violation”. If you talk with software engineers, you need to say, “Security breach”. You cannot use words interchangeably. Doing so would change the face reaction of your listeners in the negative sense. Similarly, when you talk about “thinking an entity in more than one ways”, usage of “perspectives” sounds better than “angles”. This is the reason why I emphasize in enhancing your vocabulary, which if mastered can do wonders!

How To Become A Good Teacher?

Education – A wonderful entity that has been quietly sitting behind every man and becoming the cause for his victory or failure. For a man, his actions and their consequences reflect his interest, knowledge and attitude towards that particular work. An artist’s oeuvre not only portrays beauty but also his perspiration, love towards his work, and attitude towards the theme he chose. In the similar way, a man’s education and the way he was brought up would influence the outcome of his actions and behavior. Let me narrow down to a more specific term, “the way to bring up a man during his education” rather than the most general term, “education”.

If I isolate this term for research I would end up with several intangible representations like, through love, behavior, attitude, rationality and so on to concentrate. But, the root lies in a single word, and that is the influencing factor of all the above mentioned terms. It is none but pedagogy.A teacher, at the primary stage of a man’s life, when he was a child, is next to his parents, a hero, a role model, the one whose actions would be stamped in his mind. A teacher has the power to make him a great philosopher or even a terrorist. Every utterance of a teacher, though small, may bring about an incredible change in a child’s mind. In particular, the scholastic days plays a major role. I wish to emphasize the importance of the paradigm a teacher chooses for teaching his students.

The goal of teaching, as said by Einstein, is to train the mind to think. A teacher must not immure his teachings within the walls of the class room. His discussions should not be confined to book content He must be able to soothe the boredom resulting from teaching without interludes, by his badinage and interesting anecdotes. Pupils have affinity to interesting stories, no matter what level they are in, maybe a school student, a college student or a professional. Everybody likes to hear stories.Initial class of any subject must start with a beautiful, fresh story related to the subject that would be taught next. A teacher needs to realize that there is no substitute for a humorous approach with a smiling face always. Smile would, not only grab everyone’s attention but also mesmerizes one to follow his path. It would be difficult to enjoy the pleasure of grabbing the students’ attention. Remember, the secret lies only in the ability to interconnect the subject under study, with day-to-day life. Supposing, the teacher teaches physics, it is not a sin to disclose the anecdotes about the great philosopher and mathematician, Rene Descartes, who always emphasizes the essence of commonsense, which may expose his pupil to a new world called philosophy and to know the importance of commonsense or logical thinking towards any real-world entity (For his physics too!). This would rather be a better path to bring up, than to set limits for a student’s learning process, in the name of curriculum.

A teacher should play the role of a teacher, a parent, a friend, a guide, a scientist, a philosopher, a judge, and many other. No other profession has had such kind of responsibilities encapsulated in a single profession. His talk should not be desultory. His teaching must tend to confabulation, rather than a mere lecture. He must let the students to talk by asking as many simple queries as possible to stimulate the real talents in them. If a student’s response appears to be inappropriate, he must accept that with a smile and correct, and not objurgate it. Applause should surround the student for any cogent response. A teacher should never be irascible and never utter a pejorative word at any instant. I have always been attracted by philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, and Confucius. I wish to mention Aristotle’s words in one of his greatest works, ‘The Nichomachean Ethics’. He says, “The man who is to be good must be well trained and habituated.” He talks about virtuousness and the only way to attain it is through education and what I say is good education could be obtained only from the pedagogy of a good teacher.

Be Responsive, Be On Top!

Here, I am going to explore a new perspective that, like the 'balance' factor I told you before, would help you to take right decisions, or to arrive at a satisfied answer. Let's start with what we are familiar with. You might be receiving a number of forward messages in your inbox; sometimes even you get frustrated because of that. Among those messages, at least one third of the messages would be based on inducing one's feeling to get success. It might say, "Sleepless nights would bring a colorful life" or, "Do not worry about others critics!" or, similar statements. Even you yourself might have typed a new one to send it to your pals. Have you ever thought of following that in reality? Maybe one among a hundred would do (If you are in this category, then fine dude!) Do you know the reason? Because many of us do not wish to take risks or come out of our comfort zones. We all are liable to mistake and fail. None can deny this. But, you are not realizing that you are slowly been made a scapegoat of cowardliness. Cowards do not fit any respectful society. Okay, Let me come to the point for what I was saying this illustration. Even an atomic point would lead to a titanic progress, like this simple SMS statements do.

Supposing your friend gets trapped in a big problem. He asks for your aid to tackle the problem. Even if you reiterate a sequence of statements to solve the problem, it would fall on deaf ears. He/She would be in a confused state and would follow what his or her mind say and not yours (In this, if you and your friend are exceptional, then applause!!). You would know that if he or she takes your path, he or she can easily get rid of the problem but, the victim's perception would probably block your words dude! Here also the same simple statements by an experienced, if followed, would get you through.

Now, the relationship between what we are talking about and the title of this article is beginning to blossom. In your friend's case, you might have arrived at a conclusion, if he or she had listened to you; damn sure, he or she wouldn't have become a victim. So, when you come across a problem, maybe for you or someone related to you, think of the simple points reiterated by an experienced hand. The white-haired had always had something to say you, which you would have thrown into your mind's trash. They had to experience the same agony that you experienced when your friends trashed your essence of problem-solving assertions, whenever you neglect them. Compare your attitude, when you were a problem solver, with the experienced, who reiterate simple points which would seem to be meaningless for you or an entity creating boredom. These damn statements are really going to lift you up! Let it be small tips written in a book, absorb it and analyze its meaning deeply. Never ever ignore anybody’s views. It will uproot your ignorance.

Know The Importance Of 'Balance' Factor

The title seems to be odd. Isn't it? Yes! This article is about the one and only word 'balance' and its role in your life, career and everything. Before thinking me as a crazy fellow, go ahead reading this piece. Right from childhood, a man is surrounded by lot of problems. It is mandatory to confront them since hardly he can escape. Well, what is the relationship between life and this 'balance' factor? There is no such relationship, but if you acquire this factor in you, you could be able to tackle your problems easily. Balancing is the way of having both the optimistic and pessimistic attitudes; not being at either of the extremes at any instance.
To make it clear let me explain you with some examples. Take a professional working in an organization. If he acts with his family, in the same manner as he does with his employees in his workplace, think of the family’s condition. So, decision should be dynamic based on the situation and not on any defined set of rules. A 'balance' need to be maintained between the two different entities called, 'family' and 'profession'.

I will explain you with one simpler example. Say, your boss compels you to attend a meeting on a Saturday. Unfortunately, you need to be in your home on that day for your personal commitment. What will you do? Will you drop your personal work for the meeting? Or will you ignore the meeting for your personal happiness? In this imbroglio, your decision should not be based on completing one complete task of the two, but should be based on satisfying both the sides. One choice is to attend the meeting and at the same time, the day before that, sit with your family members to placate them for not spending time with them. Your lovable talk should erase the hard feelings developed in them as you’ve not going to spend time with them as planned. Secondly, if the meeting is a commonly held one and is of less importance, you may explain your situation to your boss to get his nod to leave the office happily; thereby getting the double benefit of not hurting both the sides. You should maintain a balance between the two. Both, your family and your boss should not be disappointed by your decision.
Elevating the concept to the management level, a good management strategy should be dynamic. It should not adhere to some defined set of rules for management. What I want to emphasize is that, you have to deal differently to different persons accordingly to achieve progress. Suppose you have 100 employees under you. Among them, 20 are Indians, 30 are Japanese, and 50 are Americans. Is it intellectual to strictly adhere to defined rules and handle all of them in a similar way? Certainly not!! Say for example, Indians are emotional. To make an Indian work, you need to go to him and enquire about his family and get close with him. Talk about their family’s vacation plan, their children and their education rather than just talking about production and marketing. Companies which consider their employees' personal commitments will definitely prosper.

Well, now let us remove the management hat and come to a layman's view. You must be able to deal accordingly to different persons. It not only provides success, but also helps in tackling problems easily. Be a good listener, analyze things and maintain balance. Love everyone in this earth. After all, this is the only life we have. There is no substitute for, responding to a person with a charming face, uttering pleasant words. Love is the only management strategy which cannot be won by any other strategy. The more hearts you conquer, the more you are moving forward in your life!!!
